Enchanting allows you to improve armour, tools, weapons by adding additional abilities or by improving previous ones. Books can also be enchanted so "enchantments" can be applied by your choosing. There are 4 ways of enchanting items:

  • Using and enchantment table in exchange for experience points (XP).

  • By Using An Anvil - Combining items of the same type (i.e diamond sword) with different existing enchantments into a single item that has the enchantments of both. This also costs XP.

  • Combining enchanted books with an item, which also costs XP.

  • Trading with a Priest Villager in exchange for emeralds.

Items can also be enchanted by using the /enchant command or by using an anvil and enchanted books in Creative Mode for 'free enchanting'.

Enchanting

The Strategy To Enchanting.

Since version 1.3, which brought the change of experience tables to enchanting tables, there are some subtleties in choosing the level of your enchantments and the XP cost. The first 16 levels are the cheapest. You can do low-level enchantments between various activities such as mining coal for efficiency. After these 16, enchanting gets continiously more expansive up until level 30. So if you want to gain a big enchantment it is best to gather as much XP as you can then enchant it all in 1 single shot. Over time you will find the best level for you to gain the best enchantments for you. If you don't have anything in particular to enchant, you can enchant a book and then apply it to an item of your choosing later. Also enchanting a tool which is main out of either wood, stone or gold is a waste of levels as these materials mean your tools have a low durability.

Enchanted Books.

Enchanted books can be gained in several ways. As stated above, enchanted books can be made by using an enchanting book to enchant a book. They can also be found in chests that have be generated in the world such as monster spawners. Enchanted Books can also be purchesed from a Librarian for emeralds. However, books are limited to only 1 enchantment which is random. Enchanted books can be applied to items which can't be enchanted via an enchanting table (e.g. Silk Touch Sheers) by using an anvil but this does cost you XP to do so.
